Paraparaumu College – Twitter use

Paraparaumu College uses Twitter in a number of ways across the organisation. Twitter is used to support teaching and learning, sports administration and connecting with the school community.

Several teachers use twitter as a way of connecting with other like minded colleagues throughout New Zealand and overseas. It lets them share ideas, gain new perspectives and share resources. These ideas and resources feed into the classroom.  Twitter use by teachers is fairly well embedded in the Science and Physical Education departments. Teachers also use twitter for notification to students and parents of homework tasks or assessment deadlines.  Twitter is a useful tool for scholarship students and students who have a high level of interest in a particular subject area. It allows the teachers to link their students to relevant external readings or articles on a topic which can be filtered and then retweeted for their students. Students get a much broader view of a topic and its associated topics in this way.

Sport plays an important role at Paraparaumu College. There is a dedicated sports website which is online community for sport at the college. A twitter feed is embedded on this site. Twitter is used to celebrate sporting success across the college as well as sharing results and pictures of sporting events.

Gregor Fountain (The Principal) uses Twitter regularly. His feed is embedded on the College’s website. The feed help keeps the website fresh and up to date. It is a good record of what is happening at the school and using it models the tools used in modern learning. Recently the school has used Twitter as a channel to connect with the community about the Paraparaumu College Good Learner Profile project. It has proved to be an invaluable tool in sharing ideas that have been generated through the project and as a mechanism for further consultation.
